MkDocs
"MkDocs is a fast, simple and downright gorgeous static site generator that's geared towards building project documentation. Documentation source files are written in Markdown, and configured with a single YAML configuration file." - http://www.mkdocs.org/
Potentially abandoned
As of late 2025, mkdocs appears to be abandoned:
- There were only 4 commits to master in 2025 https://github.com/mkdocs/mkdocs/commits/master/, all of them trivial changes to non-core content.
- 2025-07-17 https://github.com/mkdocs/mkdocs/discussions/4010 is a thread directly about lack of maintenance.
- 2024-04-06 https://github.com/mkdocs/mkdocs/discussions/3621 has some additional context about maintenance friction.
- 2025-11-24 https://pythonbytes.fm/episodes/show/459/inverted-dependency-trees pythonbytes 459 brought this to my attention and mentioned a new static site generator from the makers of mkdocs-material called zensical which as of late 2025 is aiming for feature parity with mkdocs-material.
